ABSTRACT

The Human Resources (HR) function is the key partner in embedding Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and Sustainability initiatives in any organisation, as this can be achieved only when a company educates, engages and empowers its entire workforce. This chapter proposes that the HR function has a responsibility to be proactive in leading the way in establishing a company-wide CSR-enabled culture. Employee engagement is the result of creating a responsible workplace. In a responsible workplace, employees advance the business as well as advancing the corporate social responsibility of the business. CSR begins with creating a responsible workplace, where the business takes responsibility for its impacts on employees and their families. A responsible business takes active steps to ensure employees are informed about and understand what they should be able to expect from their employer both in terms of the law and in terms of additional employee policies and practices which apply in the workplace.
