ABSTRACT

This chapter provides Jordan profiles which includes key information about the relevant corporate sustainability and responsibility (CSR) history, country-specific issues, trends, research, education and leading organizations. The Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan is a constitutional monarchy with a representative government. Jordan has played a key role in promoting peace and stability in the Middle East. Jordan's demographic profile is a major factor affecting development opportunities. Lacking the oil wealth of some of its neighbours and with limited rainfall and arable land, Jordan is classified as a lower–middle income country. Jordanian society is characterised by its efforts to foster a strong national identity. Although CSR in Jordan is an emerging phenomenon and is understood mainly as a philanthropic concept, the fact that business has found 'causes' to engage with is not new; business in Jordan has proved active on various social causes. The Jordan Education Initiative was launched to accelerate education reform through a public–private partnership model that drives innovation and capability.
