ABSTRACT

This chapter provides Kenya profiles which includes key information about the relevant corporate sustainability and responsibility (CSR) history, country-specific issues, trends, research, education and leading organizations. CSR has risen to prominence in recent years, and it is an emerging practice among businesses operating in Kenya. The uptake of CSR among companies in Kenya can be explained by specific economic, social, cultural and political factors, which include, among others, the nature of corporations and their role in public administration. According to a survey conducted among 70 companies operating in Kenya, prominent CSR issues are education, environment, HIV/AIDS and health. CSR in Kenya is embedded within the national context and is motivated by both altruistic and economic rationales. The main branch of law regulating companies in Kenya, namely company law, defines the responsibilities of directors through the lens of shareholder value. Kenyan domestic companies, by contrast, were seen to engage in value-driven CSR.
