ABSTRACT

This chapter provides Mexico profiles which includes key information about the relevant corporate sustainability and responsibility (CSR) history, country-specific issues, trends, research, education and leading organizations. Mexico has a very long tradition of social responsibility, which can be tracked back to the indigenous cultures of the region before America was 'discovered'. Several natural disasters hit Mexico and the reaction to these was a demonstration of social responsibility from many organisations. Mexico is a relatively large country with close to 2 million km of surface, a diverse climate and biomes ranging from deserts to tropical forests. Mexico is one of the ten richest countries in terms of species diversity in the world. This situation challenges Mexico to balance ecological integrity with economic growth and the needs of its large population—estimated to be over 103 million people. The economic challenges in Mexico have to do with the population at the base of economic pyramid, especially those who lack access to basic nutrition.
