ABSTRACT

This chapter provides Nigeria profiles which includes key information about the relevant corporate sustainability and responsibility (CSR) history, country-specific issues, trends, research, education and leading organizations. Nigeria has a population of about 140 million and is rich in natural and human resources. Poverty is one of the most critical challenges facing Nigeria. Corruption is endemic in Nigerian society and polity. The pervasiveness of corruption in Nigeria is corroborated by independent corruption indexes. The popularity of the contemporary usage of the term CSR can be linked to the renewed surge of economic activities after the 1999 return of political democracy in Nigeria. Nigeria is one of the few countries in the world to legislate on CSR. There are some international codes and standards that are being adopted by some firms in Nigeria, although the diffusion of such practices is extremely low. CSR underpins the company's concern for the sustainable economic development of Nigerian communities.
