ABSTRACT

This chapter provides Philippines profiles which includes key information about the relevant corporate sustainability and responsibility (CSR) history, country-specific issues, trends, research, education and leading organizations. In the Philippines, the concept and practice of CSR is rooted in cooperative and community associations involving business and society. The legitimacy of CSR depends on at least two factors: The Philippine Constitution defines the state's role in promoting equality and the common good, and the Corporation Code enforces the responsibility of boards and directors to practice good governance. CSR in the Philippines has moved rapidly from a broad discourse on issues to strategies for implementing and sustaining CSR initiatives. The Pilipinas Shell Foundation is the social arm of the Shell Oil Company in the Philippines. It runs programmes covering two million beneficiaries for the development of leadership; technical and vocational skills; health, sanitation and safety; livelihood and entrepreneurship; educational improvement; and environmental stewardship.
