ABSTRACT

This chapter provides Sri Lanka profiles which includes key information about the relevant corporate sustainability and responsibility (CSR) history, country-specific issues, trends, research, education and leading organizations. Sri Lanka was ruled by monarchs as a whole or in parts until the Portuguese landed in 1505 to govern the coastal regions. Philanthropy, or dhana, is an integral part of Sri Lankan culture, but most businesses have not taken on board the more secular, humanitarian and social development reasons for engaging in CSR. Being a developing country, the Sri Lankan government cannot take on the development burden alone. A survey by International Alert showed that the public expects businesses to play a major role in bringing peace to Sri Lanka. According to United Nations Environment Programme/United Nation forecasts presented at the Chief Executive Officer Water Mandate, Sri Lanka will be one of the few nations in Asia in 2025 with 'abundant water resources'.
