ABSTRACT

This chapter provides United Arab Emirates (UAE) profiles, including key information about the relevant corporate sustainability and responsibility (CSR) history, country-specific issues, trends, research, education and leading organizations. As a young and vibrant country, the United UAE is characterised by rich cultural, historical and religious traditions which have had a strong influence on its business environment. The modern UAE has emerged as an international strategic business hub with many global companies and burgeoning sectors of manufacturing, trade, finance, real estate and tourism. UAE is one of fastest-growing economies of the world, driven not only by a rise in value of the oil and gas sector, but also by impressive performance of the non-oil sector. CSR in UAE draws on deep-rooted Arab—Islamic traditions that promote endowments and community initiatives. The sheikhs and leadership of the Emirates have also given support and provided a vision for CSR activities in UAE. UAE's national legislation is generally in compliance with international labour standards.
