ABSTRACT

This chapter provides United States of America profiles which includes key information about the relevant corporate sustainability and responsibility (CSR) history, country-specific issues, trends, research, education and leading organizations. Beginning in the late 1960s and early 1970s, the US government established regulatory agencies that shaped much of the CSR benchmarks guiding business operations. US corporate philanthropy also accelerated due to regulation. As US business integrates CSR into core business, there is increased pressure on defining the value of corporate investment in CSR. For any US business operating globally, human rights has become a material concern, ranking the second highest concern in the Business for Social Responsibility Poll. The US government regulates on key social, consumer and environmental issues. The US Congress has not ratified the International Labour Organization Convention on the Freedom of Association and Protection of the Right to Organize Convention or the Right to organize and Collective Bargaining Convention.
