ABSTRACT

Because of the nature of sustainability positions, people may find that they need to conduct an “off-campus” or “independent” job search, rather than relying exclusively on on-campus recruiting activities. Some tips for conducting an off-campus search focused on sustainability careers: read extensively about the latest industry news and sustainability issues in chosen field, join Net Impact, join industry-specific groups and listservs, attend important industry conferences to network, develop local networks, leverage social networking sites, visit sustainable job posting sites, set up search agents, use all of personal networks and request informational interviews with contacts at companies of interest. A job in sustainability isn’t a one-shot deal; it’s a journey. In talking with MBA alumni who have successfully found sustainability positions, a few themes emerge again and again — be entrepreneurial in search, be flexible, and be persistent.
