ABSTRACT
One of the most eagerly awaited additions to the field of leadership development for sustainability and corporate citizenship was the launch of the Global Institute for Responsible Leadership. While the professional corporate citizenship community has built up a fair amount of expertise in engaging external stakeholders because of the threat of reputational damage if this fails—engaging employees and managers in this work has previously received little press. The Observer suggests that the consultants working on corporate citizenship issues at the big auditors will see Association of Accountancy and Business Affairs proposals a little differently. Although most media during the first three months of 2003 were dominated by coverage of the possible, invasion of Iraq, hardly a peep on the issue came from the corporate citizenship or environmental management magazines, newsletters and websites. The California decision pleased the corporate citizenship community as they worried that other companies might follow Nike in suspending their corporate responsibility reporting in case of legal action.
