ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the challenges and opportunities of approaching poverty alleviation by stimulating sustainable economic growth by and for the smallholders involved in organic farming and trading. The construct of the case studies is 'designed with a purpose' in order to study the opportunities and challenges facing smallholders and the effects on sustainability and poverty. The base of the pyramid (BoP) concept, however, can be a significant driving force in the evolution of progress and in creating a new approach to poverty alleviation. Corporation and NGOs can joint innovates BoP business and the value chain by growing both new markets and niche segments in mature markets organic and fair trade. A farming project uses the business model of farming and marketing and development, in order to create export markets. Ideal Providence Farms has developed an international market channel into Europe, North America, the Middle East and Japan.
