ABSTRACT

This chapter questions the consequences of globalization trends for control structures in general and environmental problems in particular. It seeks to address which governance approaches could contribute to sustainable development against this background. The chapter analyses globalization processes and discusses a glance at the interconnection between globalisation and environmental impacts. It also analyses resulting changes in control structures, paying particular attention to the multiplicity of forms and levels of regulation, including the level of norms and values. The chapter considers changes in control structures in terms of regulation possibilities and subsequently attempts to analyse possible approaches to governance for sustainability. It argues that co-operation is becoming increasingly complex and that some sort of market regulation is becoming increasingly significant. The chapter outlines how proposals for action could be constructed.
