ABSTRACT

From the developing countries’ perspective, ensuring successful development is key for sustainability. The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) of the United Nations (UN) translate this claim into a set of time-bound and measurable goals and targets. The only goal of the MDGs that generally and specifically covers international relations is Goal 8, namely to ‘develop a global partnership for development’. This chapter provides a view on Goal 8. It focuses on only some aspects of the governance structure of the global economic system, their effects on development. The chapter mainly focuses on international trade and multilateral rules under the World Trade Organisation (WTO). It discusses the global financial system and some of the specific targets. The chapter also provides suggestions on clarifying or adding to the targets or indicators.
