ABSTRACT

Acting on, and integrating, sustainability concepts into organizations requires attention both to technological issues and to social (or “people”) issues. Moving towards sustainability will require significant shifts in technology and organizational coordination. Often, however, considerably more emphasis has been placed on the technological aspects of sustainability. The changes required sometimes sound as if an incomprehensible language must be learned about how to close “technical nutrient loops” or to increase “EER while maintaining BTU.”2 These technical terms can blind us to the even more important issues of human change that lie at the heart of sustainable development.
