ABSTRACT
The Global Compact initiative is rooted in the traditions of the UN and its family of organisations and also in more recent, largely private, developments related to ‘globalisation’ and ‘corporate social responsibility’ (CSR). These traditions are, in theory, complementary, but may conflict in practice. The two approaches create a certain tension inside the Global Compact.
