ABSTRACT

I should be counted as a ‘Compactophile’ of the first hour. In my view the universal principles provide the shared reference to all corporate citizenship initiatives. In the early discussions around corporate social responsibility business quickly came to the conclusion that ‘one size cannot fit all’. But it must also accept that it is not ‘do as you please’. Business needs a set of robust co-ordinates to stimulate alignment towards a shared purpose of progress. The principles presented in the Global Compact are precisely this non-negotiable underpinning to any corporate citizenship approach.
