ABSTRACT

The value of this junk-mail industry is substantial, with over $10 billion of revenue generated annually, and steadily growing at a rate of approximately 10% per year. A spin-off of the junk-mail industry is the business of the distribution of mailing lists. More than 2,000 mailing lists are brokered in Canada annually. Canada Post is Canada's largest single distributor of junk mail. In 1991, Canada Post generated 30% of its revenues by distributing junk mail. Increasing public awareness of environmental issues in recent years has focused negative attention on the junk-mail industry. In Canada, a minimum of two million trees are harvested each year for junk mail, 99% of which is thrown out or, at best, recycled. These cards indicated that customers wanted junk mail halted at the mailbox and at its source. They also introduced the Anti-Junk Mail symbol, which was created to become synonymous with the kit through distribution and media coverage.
