ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the concepts covered in the preceding chapters of this book. The book focuses on the responsibility of transnational corporations (TNCs) and the private sector more generally for the protection and promotion of human rights. It considers specific issues: the human rights responsibilities of companies; the law and policy options for ensuring the human rights performance of corporations; and corporate responses to human rights issues. The book presents case studies of companies’ failure to accept their responsibility for the protection and promotion of human rights, leading to human rights violations occurring or being exacerbated. It illustrates the positive outcomes that can be achieved when companies accept responsibility and engages constructively with specific human rights issues. The efforts of the Thai government and non-governmental organisations to encourage TNCs to establish facilities in rural areas are seen as an important part of the country’s efforts to combat HIV/AIDS.
