ABSTRACT

Within the DG Enterprise the mood is still that eco-efficiency is a burden, not an opportunity. European competitiveness is still addressed from a short-term perspective. The need to move toward new processes, products and services to meet the basic needs of the global population, especially the poor, and to foster innovation, new competitiveness and new markets, including in Central and Eastern Europe, are simply not on the agenda. It seems that sustainability for the Commission is not a successful business paradigm-as it is perceived by a growing number of companies-but a threat.
