ABSTRACT

This chapter presents some of the results of that project as well as aspects of resource management and ecological design in general, particularly with regard to the Kambium Furniture Workshop. From the outset the design of all Kambium kitchens was oriented towards high quality and longevity of the furniture. An important role is being played by the interdisciplinary Kambium design team, in which architects, designers, engineers and dieticians are working successfully together. The resource management programme was developed at the Wuppertal Institute on the basis of the material input per service unit concept. The chapter focuses on examples of the search for dematerialisation potential through an examination of Kambium products according to various criteria for ecodesign—one very important part of Kambium’s design strategy. The three elements of resource management—material flow management, product management and ecodesign—encourage a high standard in terms of cost and eco-efficiency of products and production patterns.
