ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book is concerned with why poor environmental performance objectives in environmental management systems (EMSs) arise and present a rigorous review methodology, which they claim produces a quality of information that results in strategic objectives that fit well into other company objectives. It is also concerned with the lack of performance standards stipulated in ISO 14001. The book examines the influence of cultural and social factors in the EMS implementation in an American Indian reservation. It investigates how products, design and technology can be successfully accommodated into the EMS model. The book looks at the cost savings and marketing advantages often cited as benefits of ISO 14001 implementation. It considers sustainability and how organisations use ISO 14001 to meet the broader needs of sustainable development and also describes a framework—The Natural Step—which provides an overarching vision and guide for EMSs, steering these towards sustainability.
