ABSTRACT

The management process determines a company's operations and organisational structure by allocating appropriate resources. Resources can be human working capacity, investment in production means, raw materials and energy. Environmental management is the management of the environmental aspects of a company. The general aim of an environmental management system (EMS) is to develop a strategy to ensure that legal compliance is achieved and materials and energy are used efficiently. Cleaner production is the strategy to reduce the environmental impacts of businesses by systematically applying the principles of prevention. Cleaner production focuses on the sources of waste and emissions and on changing organisation, raw materials and process technology along the product life-cycle with the clear aim of reducing waste and emissions. To set up a really 'living' environmental management system (EMS), STENUM uses the following approach. The initial review is carried out as a cleaner production project and an environmental team is formed to do the project work within the company.
