ABSTRACT
This chapter examines to what extent ISO 14001 certification can help the private sector in Poland contribute more effectively to economic and environmental reforms, which seek to accelerate Poland's accession to EU membership. The two cases described are typical of Polish small and medium enterprises in many ways. Neither had extensive international contacts nor any special interest in environment. ABM Solid is a manufacturer of fluidised-bed boilers and operates as an environmental technology consultant. As a result of work completed to date jointly by trained Czysty Biznes advisors and Groundwork staff, ABM Solid has developed an environmental policy and has taken steps to monitor and reduce energy costs. The company is one of the most active members in the Tarnow Chamber of Commerce with regard to environmental and community issues. In fact, the process of implementing an integrated management system has led to a greater awareness that a major opportunity for business development lies in the field of environmental technology.
