ABSTRACT

Niagara Mohawk Power Corporation (NMPC) is recognised as a pioneer in the US electric utility industry in respect of several of its environmental management system initiatives. The Working Group suggested measuring air emissions as pounds of pollutant per MWh of electricity generated. Multiple benefits have been derived from NMPC's environmental performance measurement and environmental benchmarking initiatives. NMFC's environmental performance (EP) index was developed by in-house technical personnel; however, valuable input was received from a team of external experts who reviewed and critiqued NMPC's work. NMPC was convinced that it had captured in its EP Index all of the essential environmental performance factors associated with its operations and that the scoring system developed would perform a good job in reflecting overall performance, at least on a qualitative basis. NMPC's EP Index provides a clear and visible yardstick for demonstrating achievement of environmental performance targets.
