ABSTRACT

This chapter elaborates on the problem of managing the ecological challenge from a competence point of view. It discusses a set of competence areas from a management perspective, which together form the concept of 'ecological competence'. The chapter starts out with a discussion of the relationship between competence and strategic decision-making. It then further examines the organisational learning framework. Organisational learning theories explore the transformation mechanism that contribute to meaning and learning. The concept of ecological competence establishes a first step in specifying useful descriptions of an ecological learning process and may serve as an analytical tool for researchers interested in exploring this subject further. Finally, the organisational learning perspective advocates industry research collaboration and is a vote in favour of looking at what is possible to accomplish on the actual base of knowledge in a given situation and at a given time.
