ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at how one vehicle manufacturer-Rover Group-is making environmental issues a key component of its business strategy. It aims to draw out the learning points from the Rover Group experience for other businesses wishing to improve their environmental performance. Rover Learning Business, the people and organisation development unit in the Rover Group, together with senior management (particularly those on the Environmental Strategy Committee) recognised the need for a process to galvanise associates into action. Thus, a Strategic Human Resources initiative was set in motion, whereby external providers were sought who could help to set up a learning cascade through the business. Rover Learning Business, the training and development function of the Group, took responsibility for the setting up of the cascade programme, together with the environmental committee.
