ABSTRACT

This chapter presents some initial findings of a research project on the implementation of corporate social responsibility policies in a sample of companies. The concept of human resources management received considerable attention in the 1980s with the publication of a number of influential management books beginning with In Search of Excellence. In ‘Iceland’, the origins and motivation for the CFC policy initiative within the company can be linked to a number of related factors: impending legislation, public image, competition and corporate values. The complexity is thus not merely about identifying all the different components of a particular product or process, but also in tracing all the connections involved from the production and sourcing of each component back to the origins of raw materials and methods by which they have been obtained. The discussion so far suggests that, as well as complexity, there is substantial risk and uncertainty involved in developing environmental responsibility in practice.
