ABSTRACT

The uniqueness of this working environment is largely a result of a combination of factors, some of which are common to all voluntary-based organisations and others that arise from its focus upon women and the environment. The heading of this chapter and the context in which it is read might lead the reader to construe that there is a practised form of management that conforms to 'environmental' principles. In terms of physical resource use and management, there is a definite trend within commerce and industry to devise corporate environmental policies and to implement environmental management systems. Within the NGO sector, there are certainly examples where equity and egalitarianism is promoted as the underlying philosophy intended to frame and inform all organisational policies and practices, particularly those governing human resource management. In human resource management terms, problems usually occur around the ability to recruit volunteers with the skills mix, experience necessary to ensure a fair and equal distribution of the workload.
