ABSTRACT

Henderson Global Investors is an international fund management company with £66.5 billion in assets under management worldwide. Henderson's history of managing sustainable and responsible investment (SRI) portfolios is particularly relevant to an understanding of its approach to engagement and activism. Some fund managers provide 'engagement-only' services, whereby engagement is carried out on behalf of a client without the fund manager concerned managing the underlying assets. It is also argued by some that there is a responsibility upon investors to seek to ensure that companies operate within commonly agreed standards of conduct, and that such a responsibility obtains independently of the extent to which a given form of corporate behaviour might be beneficial or detrimental in business terms. Henderson has a team of six specialist staff for research and engagement on responsibility and governance issues. Henderson's initiative became widely known very quickly.
