ABSTRACT
Insight Investment is one of the largest investment managers in the UK. This chapter describes Insight's approach to shareholder activism relating to corporate responsibility. It sets out Insight's rationale for activism on this topic, its overall approach and the manner in which activism is implemented. The chapter, using 2004 as an example, presents an overview of a typical year's activism activity, including a description of the major themes pursued and the outcomes achieved from this activity. Insight believes that the long-term interests of its clients are generally served when companies behave responsibly by meeting the legitimate ethical and legal expectations of their customers, employees and other stakeholders. Insight's activism work is led by the eight company engagement specialists in the Investor Responsibility team. Insight organises its engagement with companies on both a sector and an issue basis.
