ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses seven key emerging concepts: Sustainable development, corporate social responsibility, stakeholder analysis, total quality management, greener consumption, environmental auditing and life cycle analysis. In 1991 the Business Council for Sustainable Development (BCSD) was established, with members drawn from a number of worldwide companies. Corporate Social Responsibility refers to the concept that business has a wider responsibility to all the communities within which it operates. Stakeholder analysis indicates the complex set of relationships and perspectives that organisations face. Total Quality Management (TQM) is a concept that has dominated Japanese and US companies in the eighties and early nineties. European businesses are also starting to adopt the principles and realise the benefits. Commitment to Sustainable Development will mean a move towards a more responsible and more thoughtful approach throughout the organisation. A number of initiatives are being taken by industry to address the relationship between Sustainable Development and industry.
