ABSTRACT

'Logistics' is the term used to describe the management of the entire materials supply chain, from cradle to grave. Logistics managers are beginning to realise that the environment is becoming an issue of competitive advantage. The logistics plan will vary considerably depending on the nature of the process under analysis. Traditionally, logistics decisions have been taken purely for financial reasons. Companies must develop coordinated greener logistics strategies for the short, medium and longer term that are integrated into the Greener Marketing plan. Consideration of the environmental impact of transport strategies and their effect on Stakeholder relations must be integrated into the decision-making process. To develop a strategy for greening materials handling, it will be necessary to carry out a full audit of operations, analysing inputs, outputs, transformation processes and handling. There will be benefits in the logistics function from the implementation of a greener personnel strategy with an emphasis on environmental awareness training.
