ABSTRACT

Global citizenship has captured the attention of corporations and society at large. R. Tiessen offers a definition of global citizenship as 'a way of understanding the world in which an individual's attitudes and behaviors reflect a compassion and concern for the marginalised and/or poor and for the relationship between poverty and wealth—within and between communities, countries and regions'. The common themes that can be taken from these definitions of global citizenship include a concern for people as well as profits, a global versus a local view of an organisation's impact, and a systemic view of commerce that includes people and the environment. Organisational values refer to beliefs about the types of goals firm members should pursue, as well as ideas regarding standards of behaviour organisational members should use to achieve these goals. Components of an organisation's culture can be isolated, but no one component fully describes or creates the culture of an organisation.
