ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the national approaches to sustainable enterprise in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). It includes key information about the priority issues, trends, and government policies as well as best-practice case studies of sustainable enterprise in SSA. The case studies include Afrique Energies Nouvelles, Appropriate Rural Technology Institute (ARTI) Energy, Creative Entrepreneurs Solutions, Kakira Sugar Limited (KSL), Kgalagadi Resources Development Company, SABMiller, Standard Bank, Trust Industries Limited, and UAP Insurance Kenya Ltd. The priority issues in Africa include a wide range of developmental challenges such as poverty, hunger, income inequality, unemployment, corruption, human rights, infrastructure, gender equality and environmental protection. Intra-African trade is another priority issue for the growth of sustainable enterprises in Africa. Innovative entrepreneurs are turning previously accepted norms on their head and formulating new ideas and ways to solve the developmental problems of Africa.
