ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the national approaches to sustainable enterprise in Lebanon. It includes key information about the priority issues, trends, and government policies as well as best-practice case studies of sustainable enterprise in Lebanon. Lebanon's peculiar history and location have given rise to 18 different religious sects and cultural backgrounds: Muslims, Christians, Druze and various denominations which are officially recognized by the Lebanese government within the context of a unique representative confessional democratic system. Very few studies have been published that quantify the precise existence of sustainable enterprise or Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in Lebanon, mainly due to the nascent nature and minimal understanding of this new field. Qualitative studies have however sprouted from the academic sector in Lebanon, in an effort to evaluate the various local interpretations of CSR in the country, the differences in CSR practices among SMEs and MNCs in Lebanon, and the general motivations driving CSR and the social enterprise sector.
