ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the national approaches to sustainable enterprise in Qatar. It includes key information about the priority issues, trends, and government policies as well as best-practice case studies of sustainable enterprise in Qatar. Social enterprises have emerged in Qatar with a focus on youth development, employment creation and entrepreneurship aimed at promoting sustainable economic and the social development of the country. Despite large government investments in know ledge economy initiatives, Qatar is facing numerous challenges through rapid population growth and reliance on expatriate labour for its skilled labour needs. Qatar's approach to sustainability is linked to the four pillars that underpin the Qatar National Vision 2030 – Human Development, Economic Development, Social Development and Environmental Development. In this sense, the narrow Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) social agenda is being replaced by the more balanced practices of sustainability.
