ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the national approaches to sustainable enterprise in Rwanda. It includes key information about the priority issues, trends, and government policies as well as best-practice case studies of sustainable enterprise in Rwanda. A shift in economic base will move the country from heavy dependence on foreign aid to one in which there are much higher levels of local investment. An economic challenge faced by Rwanda is the large internal budget deficit, a gap often filled by aid inflows, and the difficulty in managing the external balance of payments. Government policies aim to accelerate economic growth and foster development of enterprises, especially among young people. It supports business growth through policies on trade liberalization, privatization, tax reforms, competitive exchange rates and market driven interest rates. Because of Rwanda's history and the impact of the genocide, NGOs are still prevalent, both local and international, and provide much-needed advisory services for start-up businesses.
