ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the national approaches to sustainable enterprise in United Arab Emirates (UAE). It includes key information about the priority issues, trends, and government policies as well as best-practice case studies of sustainable enterprise in UAE. Corporate social responsibility (CSR) and sustainability in the UAE is still thought of as community involvement, corporate giving and volunteering work. Businesses still view social, economic and environmental issues as peripheral or as an add-on, rather than linked to the core of the business. Emiratization, which is an initiative by the government of the United Arab Emirates to employ its citizens in a meaningful and efficient manner in the public and private sectors, is vital for the future of the nation. 2013 was declared as the Year of Emiratization and the aim is to increase for placing more UAE nationals in private-sector jobs. CSR has always existed in UAE in the form of charities, most often linked to the religious culture.
