ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the national approaches to sustainable enterprise in Cameroon. It includes key information about the priority issues, trends, and government policies as well as best-practice case studies of sustainable enterprise in Cameroon. Cameroon is a central African nation situated alongside diverse countries, from the politically unstable and economically stranded Central African Republic to the continental economic and political superpower of Nigeria. Cameroon and its population face several challenges, including alarming unemployment rates, employment insecurity and underemployment of youth. The Cameroonian business environment is not very conducive to social entrepreneurship and sustainable business. The government is making some steps to enable entrepreneurship as a catalyst to social and community development. The concept of social economy is given priority by the government, with a focus on the promotion of multi-stakeholder entities such as cooperatives, common interest groups and common initiative groups.
