ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the national approaches to sustainable enterprise in Eritrea. It includes key information about the priority issues, trends, and government policies as well as best-practice case studies of sustainable enterprise in Eritrea. As a young nation, mining is a lifeline for the country's economic development. There is evidence available from the activities of the mining companies and the Government of Eritrea of progressive and sustainable development and consideration for the need for environmental and water conservation. The Eritrean government has been working closely with the UNDP and the European Union to address the country's growing need for energy and to create sustainable solutions to tackle deforestation and reduce carbon emissions. Key concerns are desertification, access to clean water, food security, locusts, drought, land and soil erosion and climate change. The Government's strategies, notably the Macro Policy document published in 1994, provides for sustainable development, which includes the environment.
