ABSTRACT

According to the Human Development Index, the majority of states in the South-East Asia and Oceania regions are classified as "medium" in terms of the level of their development. In the South-East Asia and Oceania regions, there is growing awareness that sustainability is a critical component of the larger socio-ecological system and is therefore something to be encouraged. The really exciting trend – yet to be documented in any meaningful way – is the emergence of sustainability entrepreneurs who are identifying social-ecological problems as opportunities for establishing sustainable enterprise. Green School is probably the best example in the world of a school as a sustainable enterprise. The ecological footprint of the school is close to zero as it functions in perfect harmony with its environs, and uses an organic permaculture system – cultivated and managed by the students – to provide a source of food and a sink for recycling waste.
