ABSTRACT

Sri Lanka has a strong tradition of philanthropy – with defensive, charitable or promotional approaches to Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) generally evident among businesses. Youth empowerment and social entrepreneurship are significant priorities for Sri Lanka, which has faced two major youth uprisings: in the early 1970s and again in the late 1980s. On environmental issues, as a developing island nation subject to tropical climate patterns, Sri Lanka is highly vulnerable to climate change impacts. Extreme weather events, such as high intensity rainfall followed by flash floods and landslides and extended dry periods resulting in water scarcity, are becoming common. Water is a core element of the clothing industry. To ensure the industry's responsibility and sustainability, Brandix Lanka initiated water-focused projects via its own Bindu Foundation. The Kiruwanaganga Tea Estate became Rainforest Alliance-certified in 2011, implementing an integrated sustainability programme.
