ABSTRACT

Georgia was a part of the Soviet Union until its independence in 1991. It has a population of around 4.6 million people and is bound by the Black Sea on the west, sharing the rest of its borders with Russia, Azerbaijan, Armenia and Turkey. In 2012, a newly elected Georgian government, the first to come to power peacefully in the country's history, set out its programme, covering a number of topics of importance. It promised to create a better sense of justice in the country and free legal and law enforcement bodies from "political pressure". The concept of "sustainable enterprise" is not yet common in Georgia. The rare businesses that are familiar with the trend towards sustainability continue to use the term "corporate social responsibility" (CSR) and focus on incremental change. A restructuring of the Georgian government in 2010 led to the Ministry of Economic Development being renamed the Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development.
