ABSTRACT

This chapter provides key information on the national context, priority issues, trends, government policies, and case studies of sustainable enterprise in Poland. Poland is a market-based democracy in the centre of Europe with the population of 38.1 million. Since 2004, Poland has been a member of the European Union and it remains one of the fastest growing economies in European Union. Debate on environmental issues in Poland is connected with energy security, as energy supply needs to double by 2030 to support a competitive economy. This poses environmental challenges as solid fuels such as coal made up 81% of primary energy production in Poland in 2012. Furthermore, 48% of environmental investments in Poland are financed by enterprises. Corporate sustainability and responsibility is gaining more attention in Poland. Leading industries in sustainability reporting were oil and gas, consumer goods and banks.
