ABSTRACT

This chapter presents Ecuador profile that includes sustainable enterprise in context; priority issues, trends, government policies and case studies. In Ecuador there is an increasing interest in the consumption of organic products. In the 2008 Ecuadorian Constitution, food sovereignty is established as a main objective. Additionally, the Organic Law for Food Sovereignty of 2009 sets the obligation of the state to promote the transformation of conventional systems to agro-ecological ones, and also defines the preference of agro-ecological MIPYMES in its programmes for public purchases. AGRUPAR promotes the creation of organic gardens for the production of food. The project actively promotes organic production and forbids the use of genetically modified seeds. AGRUPAR is registered nationally as an organic producer and provider. In 2011 the UN stressed that agro-ecology is the key to increase and sustain productivity of wholesome foods, reduce poverty and face climate change.
