ABSTRACT

This chapter presents Guatemala profile that includes sustainable enterprise in context; priority issues, trends, government policies and case studies. The concept of sustainable enterprise is relatively new in Guatemala and only adopted by some large Guatemalan companies, or international companies with global exposure, especially to US management practices. A key issue for Guatemala remains the relatively low level of tax revenues. This constrains public investment in social services and basic infrastructure, both of which are critical to poverty reduction and sustained growth. Legislation and codes in Guatemala cover sustainable practices in a relatively indirect way. Pachamama Healthy Market is active in social and environmental projects. Farmers learn better farming practices, create better working conditions and can take better care of their children and the environment while working with more than 40 cooperatives, private farms and small farmers and artisan food producers all over the country through the Pachamama Qanan Ulew programme.
