ABSTRACT

This chapter presents Guyana profile that includes sustainable enterprise in context; priority issues, trends, government policies and case studies. In Guyana, sustainable enterprises face the challenge of reaching any kind of meaningful scale. Guyana has enacted legislation to govern the operations of small and medium-sized enterprises and provides indirect support through a dedicated Small Enterprise Development Agency, which provides micro-finance loans and business advice. In addition, while there are no specific legal guidelines on what constitutes a sustainable enterprise, Guyana does have environmental and social legislation that indirectly support environmental management. The enterprise combines aesthetic design with practices for sustainable utilization of forests. The enterprise employs harvesters from Amerindian communities near to the source of raw materials for its factory and coastal workers in a village for production of the furniture. Liana Cane is a sustainable enterprise because local communities are engaged in harvesting raw materials that would otherwise have been left lying in the forest after trees are logged.
