ABSTRACT

This chapter presents Cuba profile that includes sustainable enterprise in context; priority issues, trends, government policies and case studies. Economic and social factors such as dependence on fossil fuels, outdated vehicles and machinery, insufficient investment on sanitation and low public environmental awareness are pressing issues for Cuba. Since 1959, the state had taken responsibility for most of the social and environmental issues and introduced elements of sustainable enterprise as part of the management strategy in all state-owned companies. Sustainability is treated predominantly as environmental accountability. Article 27 of the Cuban Constitution refers to the link between development and sustainability and declares environmental protection as a citizen duty. Law 81 recognizes the right to a healthy environment where socio economic development does not compromise the availability of resources for future generations, and defines sustainable development as the aim of every government-led project.
