ABSTRACT

The third public dialogue with the Dalai Lama had a somewhat different format. In order to provide a voice for many more people and perspectives, the dialogue became part of a whole-day conference that explored the theme of leadership in creating a sustainable world. Questions were generated through a participatory process and these were later presented to the Dalai Lama. The key themes that emerged from the discussions help us to see the role of business in a new light:

The eruption of the crisis, in essence, was a result of using outdated narrow concepts to deal with a new complex interdependent world. In the 21st century, new conceptual models are needed that go beyond the ideas of endless economic growth and profit at any cost, and the accompanying attitude of “us against them.”

The crisis has shown the importance of developing a positive compassionate mind-set. This more altruistic mind-set will also help individuals be more resilient and happy, and less dependent on external factors that we believe make us happy, such as money.

Science has confirmed that love and compassion have a profound effect on personal health. For that reason, there is a need for secular ethics that can be applied to general education and business.

140Everybody has a role to play and the potential to make a difference. Economic and social systems can only be changed by people. Global companies are in an ideal position to take an active role. Ultimately, solutions will come from close cooperation and collaboration of many people and organizations.
